Instilling A Digital Culture Into Shipping
Watch this panel discussion from GST & Shipping2030 Europe 2018 on digitalisation and the digital culture in the shipping industry.
When was the last time you have spoken to someone in the industry and thought 'wow, they really don't want to change'?
According to Lars Jensen, CEO and Partner at SeaIntelligence, "that happens extremely rarely, I can't come up with any examples of that".
Indeed, Torben Rytersgaard, Director General of VISMA, believes that disruption is likely to come from within the industry, and Tamara de Gruyter, Vice President of Services in the North Europe Area at Wartsila, is one of the pioneers that advocate constant innovation.
"We have to be bold, we have to try more things", de Gruyter said.
From the operator's perspective, digitalisation is "a lever for further growth" and a way to solve complexities in customer interaction, Morten Vejlgaard, Head – Electrical & Automation, Fleet Technology at Maersk Line A/S, explained.
Representing the policy-makers and regulators, Peter Crawley, Programme Officer of the DG Research & Innovation Unit H2: Surface Transport at European Commission, and Mogens Schroder Bech, Director of Maritime R&D at the Danish Maritime Authority, however, call for caution, as digital "vulnerabilities cannot be ignored".
