People's Choice Award shortlist – vote for your winner

Nominations for the TV Connect People’s Choice Awards closed last week and we can now reveal the lucky six names that have been put forward to the public vote. The shortlist is:

  • Brendan Hole, TV Solution Architect, BT
  • Fani Sazaklidou, Creative Director, YouView TV
  • Massimo Bertollotti, Chief Technology Officer, Sky Italia
  • Matt Stagg, Head of Video, EE
  • Randolph Nikutta, Vice-President of T-Lab, Deutsche Telekom
  • Simon Jones, IPTV Architect Lead, BT TV

The shortlist is now being put to a public vote here, with the winner to be announced at the TV Connect Awards 2017 aboard the Silver Sturgeon Thames Cruiser.

Brendan HoleBrendan Hole, TV Solutions Architect at BT

Nominators described Brendan as: “A technical leader and has a critical solution architect role in BT. He architected the Sport connect red button last launched last year on the BT TV platform that powers the multi game experience for UCL when many games are happening in parallel. He also architected the new BT TV UI end to end solution that is in the middle of being launched that will revolutionise how people experience content discovery using breaking new technologies to make that happen.”

Fani SazaklidouFani Sazaklidou, Creative Director, YouView TV

Nominators say:“Fani has overseen the successful redesign of YouView's set top box and mobile apps UI which has dramatically increased both CSAT scores and the amount of video consumed on YouView's successful set top box platform.  The innovative UI has been attributed as a strong success story by TalkTalk and the simplicity and ease of use of the UI has re-energised our customer base.        The overall impact has been a 6% increase in video content consumed and a strong increase in customer satisfaction. Many reviewers have strongly praised the design of the UI.”

Nominators said of Massimo: “Massimo is by far one of the most enlightened technology leaders in the industry, endowed with both technology and strategic vision.” Innovative activities cited in his nomination include:

  • Using low latency streaming solutions to reduce the transmission delay on OTT app against satellite stream
  • adopted the HyperCloud solution deploying a high volume, high quality and scalable encoding infrastructure in a short time for the launch of NowTV HD service;
  • applied the video filter to produce Sky Italia SuperHD channel during 2016 UEFA European Championship
  • promoted Sky Italia brand as “innovator’” company towards customers and prospects;
  • created more immersive ways to enjoy Sky Italia productions through the VR
Matt StaggMatt Stagg, Head of Video, EE

Nominators said: “Matt has used his extensive influence and vision to bring the mobile video industry together and ensure an optimal experience for all consumers of video over mobile. This is both within EE but also the wider global industry. Co-founder of both the Mobile Video Alliance and the LTE-Broadcast Alliance, Matt has made a huge impact on both the industry. He lead the team that delivered the UK’s first LTE broadcast demonstration at the Commonwealth Games. Then subsequently his team delivered an award winning demonstration of the technology at the FA Cup Final in Wembley. Now working on the requirements for the Media and Entertainment vertical for 5G. His vision in this respect was a major discussion point at Mobile World Congress.”

Randolph NikuttaRandolph Nikutta, Vice-President of T-Lab, Deutsche Telekom

Nominators described Randolph as: “a leading the TV expert on business and technology aspects of IPTV, mobile TV, Web TV & video, multi-screen TV & video, VR & AR, TV delivery and Telco cloud infrastructure (Openstack), virtual STB technology, new innovative video technologies.”

The second nomination from BT, nominators said Simon “has relentless energy for driving innovation. He is one of the most collaborative, open and reasonable individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He understands the market implicitly and does not shy away from tackling complex opportunities head on. He's an inspirational business partner and the broadcast industry broadly benefit from his drive and energy. He was instrumental in BT Sport's launch of the Dolby Atmos Live service for English Premiere League Football which launched at the end of January 2017.  He went above and beyond to achieve this highly successful launch!”
