Shipping experts are sitting on the fence regarding the adoption of digital platforms in the maritime industry. Often heard is that digital solutions are simply hype and that the industry doesn’t need to adopt new tech. However, other shipping companies are clearly making headway in technological advances.
So, are you following the pen and paper methods of the traditional shipping era? Or are you harnessing IoT, AI, robotics and smart solutions?
At KNect365 Maritime we conducted a recent online poll asking:
“Are disruptive technologies overhyped in the shipping sector? Is the industry keeping up with innovation?”
Interestingly the audience was split on this question. 47% said yes, whilst 53% said no. So, it appears that some shipping professionals are still on the fence about the benefits and adoption of digital solutions in their industry.
We can already see that those embracing this new digitised movement are seeing cost savings and operational efficiencies; Maersk springs to mind. Wilhelmsen are also carrying out pilot projects on drone technology and possible applications in the shipping industry. Furthermore, the Danish Maritime Authority are considering blockchain to improve the ship registration process.
As the shipping industry carries about 90 percent of world trade in a world of fierce competition between carriers plus unbalanced supply and demand dynamics, digital solutions can give businesses a competitive edge. To survive in the future, shipping must start investing in new solutions. Like it or not the digital era is here to stay.
