The #AppsWorld 2015 mobile & apps industry predictions

Appy New Year from the Apps World team! Before we get started on this year’s exciting list of Apps World events, we’ve rounded up some of the industry’s predictions for apps and mobile in 2015 – here’s what we’re looking forward to seeing this year:

Emerging markets taking the lead on smartphone growth

With GfK Target Setter projections stating that smartphone sales will grow by 18pc in 2015 the lucrative mobile technology market continues to thrive, with the GSMA announcing last year that there are now more active mobile devices than the total human population. In 2015, however GfK is predicting that emerging markets will overtake wealthier countries in technology growth. This rise in smartphone adoption in markets such as China, India and Indonesia is believed to be due to pricing reaching the $30-$50 mark and bringing major population segments into the market.

The next level of IoT evolution

IDC have predicted that IoT will be a $3trillion industry by 2020. Connected Car is expected to be a huge area of growth with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto looking to develop their device integration solutions further in 2015. The Connected Home is also expected to see growth in 2015 with more home automation, security and monitoring devices expected to enter the market. IoT development will continue to be driven by government spending to encourage innovative and sustainable smart cities and the growing Millennials population enabling early adoption.

The catalyst year for mobile payments

With ApplePay, Amazon and PayPal expected to lead the way in 2015, Forrester is reporting this year could be a major catalyst in the growth of mobile payments. Although mainstream media and consumers are still waiting to jump on the trend, with GeekWire reporting last week that only 2% of US retailers have NFC enabled PoS systems. The growth in mobile payments in 2015 is also expected to be fuelled by an increase in consumer confidence, following the financial crisis, creating an increase in payment volumes.

Global Start up growth

Silicon Valley has become famous as the hotbed of emerging technology start-ups, as its start-up ecosystem continues to mature and flourish in 2015, Forbes is reporting that there will be new cities around the globe helping to develop and support new companies this year. New York, Seattle, Singapore and Hong Kong have been pin pointed as meccas for startups seeking funding, whilst low cost of living cities including Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai are emerging as hot spots for start-ups where funding isn’t an issue. Toronto, Chicago, Austin and Las Vegas have also been earmarked as having lucrative job markets for developers this year.

Those are the areas we think will be key in 2015, this year’s Apps World Series will be covering mobile payments, retail, M2M, IoT and everything else that SMEs, marketers, developers and IT professionals need to enter the market and thrive, as mobile and app technology continues to evolve this year!
