5G to come to Latin America in 2021/2022

Eduardo Tude, President of Teleco, gives his predictions for mobile network transformation in the Latin America region.

How soon do you think we will see commercial 5G networks in Latin America?

I expect to have the first 5G commercial launch in Latin America in 2021 or 2022. Usually the deployment on new mobile technologies comes at the same time in the main countries of the region.

What do you think that will be crucial in bringing 5G to the continent and why?

Brazil and Latin America have been laggards in adopting the new mobile technologies. Key factors that influence operators decision to launch 5G in Latin America are: Successful launch in US and Europe, Compelling Business Case, 5G smartphones available at affordable process, 5G frequency availability and 4.5 G successful transition

What use case do you think will be the key drivers for 5G commercialization?

In the beginning eMBB and FBB applications. IoT will came later.

Where do existing LTE and LTE-A networks fit into the 5G conversation?

LTE is the main mobile technology in Brazil and LTE-A helps in the preparation of the network for the deployment of 5G.

Who are you looking forward to meeting at 5G & LTE Latin America 2018?

Operators, vendors, customers, people from the whole mobile ecosystem.

Eduardo Tude will be moderating a panel on "Updates of IoT in LoRa, Sigfox, NB-IoT - How do we fit into the scene in Latin America?" at 5G & LTE Latin America 2018.
